Nina Schwanse (b. 1982, Los Angeles, CA) is a transmedia artist living and working in New Orleans. Employing character and humor to enact narratives of physical and psychological trauma, she often uses herself as actor/model. Inspired by both popular and unpopular culture, Schwanse explores the intersection of public and private as it relates to fantasy, desire, obsession, and anxiety. By embracing roles both humiliating and empowering, she creates alternative histories of regression and transcendence through various processes of re-representation. Schwanse holds a BFA from Cooper Union and an MFA from The University of New Orleans. She has been included in screenings and exhibitions nationally and internationally, and has been featured in Art21 and Art in America.
