"To me, Austin Furtak Cole's work is rooted in drawing and observation, and perhaps a bit of humor and self deprecation Lately, Austin seems to be pulling a great deal from one of painting's great champions - Phillip Guston. On a recent walk through the Metropolitan Museum, we talked for hours about painting and the hunt for new subject matter in our work. It seems clear to me he is searching for a genuine set of characters or symbols to best represent the story he is interested in finding through paint. The hands, figures and very physical forms he often paints derive from a specific and considered observation of the self".
