The body of work that is made up of the pieces entitled Self Portraits is an attempt to have my cake and eat it too. With these sculptures I continue my interest in the inherent properties of materials and what happens when they are put into interaction with each other. What I have attempted to add with this work, is to give the materials a metaphorical and psychological meaning that was previously not so evident in my work.
Each of the Self Portraits begins with a core cylinder that for the benefit of these pieces can be read as the core self or the true self. The other materials serve as protective, connective, and interactive devices. While concrete is still concrete it can also now represents a protective wall, wire is wire but it is also a porous device that marks territory but is easy to see through and penetrate.
My materials, and hence the sculptures, are representations of psychic state while at the same time they embody the purely formal and inherent properties of each material. Hence, having my cake and eating it too.
