Maya Kabat at her studio in Berkeley, California.Contact: maya@mayakabat.comWebsite: www.mayakabat.comArtist’s StatementMy paintings reference the urban landscape of Northern California, and explore relationships between architectural elements, California light, geometric abstraction and the tensions of structure, balance, color and form. With thick applications of oil paint mixed directly on the canvas, and using a range of tools intended for mudding drywall, my work is intensely physical. Areas of the surface are built and layered, and then cut away and edited as the painting evolves and develops. I am interested in the push and pull of forms in space without direct reference points where scale and perspective twist and shift. I paint to create a space for myself; to find that home in a world that at once feels solid, unchanging, and safe, while simultaneously knowing that nothing is.BioMaya Kabat received a Master of Fine Arts in 2000 from the University of California, Davis. Notable exhibitions include a solo show at the Caffe Museo at SFMOMA in 2012, a solo show at the SFMOMA Artists Gallery, San Francisco, California in 2009, and a two-person exhibition at 5 Claude Lane Gallery, in San Francisco, California which was reviewed in Art LTD. Magazine in September, 2011. This year she had her first solo exhibition at SLATE Contemporary. She is a founding member of the artist-run space, Mercury Twenty Gallery, in Oakland, California and served as President on the Oakland Art Murmur Board of Directors in 2011-2012.
